The next lecture in EKU’s Chautauqua Lecture Series, “Freedom: A Force Against Ignorance and Tyranny,” will feature rapper and lyricist Chuck D.
Chuck D will present “Race, Rap and Reality” on Thursday, Feb. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in O’Donnell Hall in the University’s Student Services Building.
Carlton Douglas Ridenhour, better known as Chuck D, is one of the founding members of rap group Public Enemy. He became known for his politically charged and often controversial lyrics. Public Enemy’s album, “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back,” was named one of the 25 most significant albums of the 20th century by The New York Times.
An advocate of free music downloading, Chuck D was the first major artist to release a full-length album on the Internet. He also testified before Congress in favor of file sharing and its effect on the music industry.
As host of the late-night satellite radio show, “On the Real,” Chuck D discusses music, entertainment and politics with guests and listeners.
In 2008, Chuck D received the Pan-African Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also nominated for an Emmy for outstanding music composition, direction and lyrics for his work on the Muhammad Ali tribute, “Ali Rap.”
